April, 2014

I just stumbled across your interesting comparison of the musical lives of Brico and Alsop. I studied piano under Dr. Brico as a high school student, gave two solo recitals for her in 1955 and 1956, then went away to college. While I was a professor at Pepperdine University in 1976, she stayed with my family in Malibu, CA when she came back to conduct the L.A. Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. It was a 40 year reunion! Despite her brilliant performances, even that late, male music critics and music directors of major symphonies still failed to appreciate her. She wanted to be invited back to L.A., but Ernst Fleischman would make no offer. Sad! Sad!
